We make the best traditional archery, bow building, recurve bow hunting, bushcraft, and survival skills videos on the web. Join Clay, Liz, and the kids on outdoor adventures from bowhunting deer and elk in the Idaho mountains to chasing wild hogs in Florida to practicing bushcraft and survival skills. We hunt and fish because we love to but it's also how we get the majority of our meat. Hunting is how we live. We also grow a big garden on our Idaho homestead. That, in combination with hunting, fishing, and foraging is how we get the majority of our food.
I didn't Expect THIS! 3 Day Solo SURVIVAL CHALLENGE
Every now and then it's good to just take off on a solo camping trip and see what happens! That's what I did on my most recent outing, a solo survival challenge, where I canoed about 30 miles over 3 days with no food or shelter, and only one bottle of water. I only brought that because I wanted to try to make a solar fire from the water bottle. Spring/Summer in Florida can be unforgiving and although I did have a little trouble with mosquitoes and deer flies, they were pleasantly absent for the most part. This was supposed to be a survival challenge so I brought no shelter or food, no way to start a fire or filter water. I'd planned on bringing along some bait but spaced that and had to search high and low for anything that might entice a fish to bite. I brought a hammock but, without a blanket, got chilled and ended up sleeping next to the fire on a bed made of conifer boughs and my life jacket. To boil water i made friction fire from materials scrounged up from the woods. Fishing was tougher than expected but I was able to forage some wild blueberries. But for the most part it was a reminder of how difficult life in the bush can be.

Revealing the Secrets of the Hand Drill FRICTION FIRE!
Переглядів 21 тис.День тому
Nothing says primitive skills quite like a hand drill friction fire. There's just something about the process of making a hand spun fire that conjures up images of primitive man. Once you understand friction fire techniques, it's not all that hard but the process can seem mysterious for those new to primitive survival skills and bushcraft. This video is kind of a hand drill friction fire 101 so...

Today we're heading out to the back 40 to put a few rounds through my 20 gauge flintlock fowler. I'll talk about the load I've been using for turkey hunting and answer some questions from the audience. How does a flintlock muzzleloader work? Gauge vs caliber, Smoothbore vs Rifle, how do you load a flintlock shotgun, and a few more odds and ends. But mostly, we're just out burning black powder a...
Island Survival Challenge: Bamboo Bow Build, Hunt, Catch & Cook
Переглядів 204 тис.21 день тому
This may be the best primitive survival/bow building video I've ever done. While on a recent trip to a tropical island, I took on the challenge of building a primitive survival bow, arrow, and bow string from local materials and seeing if I could complete an island survival challenge catch and cook. The primitive bow string was made from variegated snake plant, the primitive bow, from a large p...
Underwater Archery | Semi-Primitive Spearfishing Catch & Cook

While browsing around at #spearfishing videos I came across a video from @RyanMyersExpeditions where he was using some sort of Hawaiian sling pole spear that shot a free shaft (not tethered with a line). I thought it was a cool concept and had never seen anything like that before so I figured I'd throw something together a little more primitive. I ended up using a band from a pole spear, a chun...

In a long term survival situation or extended wilderness living, any passive food gathering methods can be vitally important. Primitive fish traps are a lot of work up front but, in the right situation, they can pay for themselves many times over. There are many ways to make fish traps and this one is inspired from some of the Asian cultures who have access to large tracts of bamboo. Bamboo is ...

In this video I'll show you how to sharpen an axe to both a rough working edge suitable for chopping and a razor edge that will slice with the best of them. Learning how to make a primitive bow and arrow just takes a little time and practice. Bow building doesn't have to be expensive. You don't have to buy an expensive bow stave or bow building tools. In this video I'll show you how to make a primitive bow using only a Bowie knife. And we'll do it in under 24 hours from live tree to finished bow ready to hunt. This would make a survival bow very ca...

This week Fen and I are back down in the heart of Florida cattle country traditional bow hunting wild hogs on the ground with friends, Scott and Alex Crippen. Florida is home to an estimated half a million feral hogs and Scott's ranch has no shortage of them. Last year Fen shot two hogs with his recurve selfbow and not long after beginning this hunt, he gets another crack at a big boar. Don't f...
Scouting Public Land Hogs & Hiking The Florida Scrub

Bowhunting hogs in the southern states can be full of challenges. Simply finding wild pigs on Florida’s public lands isn’t easy. Throw in alligators, venomous snakes, bugs, and swamps and you’ve got a unique adventure. This is my first scouting trip for wild hogs this year and although I didn’t find exotic what I was looking for, Cedar and I had a nice hike and explored some country I hadn’t se...
Mastering Fire: Essential Ferro Rod Techniques

Knowing how to quickly start a fire in a survival situation could save your life. In this bushcraft survival video I'll go over some techniques for getting the most our of a ferro rod. I often get comments from people who wonder why I even bother carrying a ferro rod, claiming that a Bic lighter is far superior. Truth is, I do carry a lighter. But I also always have a ferro rod in my pack becau...

Discover the Secrets of the ALL NIGHT FIRE | Winter Bushcraft

A while back I did a video showing the Siberian Log Fire Lay. It's a great fire lay that requires little maintenance and easily burns all night long but it does require you to get out of your warm sleeping bag to move the logs around a bit. In this video I'm experimenting with another self feeding fire, the stacked log or long log fire. After a bit of fiddling with it to get the entire length b...

10 Survival and Bushcraft HACKS you probably didn't know!
I really miss that area of Florida but not the humidity and mosquitoes! Thanks for sharing your trip with us. It is nice to see someone who does bushcraft and survival for real! The beaches along the Gulf coast are the best!😊
Very cool build. Couldn’t figure out what you were doing with the limb tips and grip. Looks amazing. Would have liked to hear your thoughts on the performance of this design. Also was interested in your tempering of the belly with both a heat gun AND torch. A much needed step with such a short bending limb section I am sure. I have also thought the long unbending limb tips are like Siyhas
Great video. I liked how you timed it for us. Also good tip on the the crack at the bottom of the Swedish torch. Thanks for that.
Hey! I was watching your clothing breakdown video. I went on first light to find the obsidian and it looks like they have two different models. The foundry pant and merino. Do you know which specific pair you use?
The merino is what I wear because they're much quieter than the foundry. But, they're kind of delicate. They recently came out with a new early season synthetic pants called Trace. They're just as quiet and more durable than the Obsidian pants. That's what I like now for warmer weather.
@@clayhayeshunter awesome, thank you for the updated input!
Enjoy all your videos
Thanks Josh
I was hoping you would find a big fat rattlesnake to eat they are delicious. 🤤
could have used the dog food for bait lol
Clay goes 74 days to win Alone and we’re supposed to think THIS is a challenge to him? Not even going to waste my time.
Give it a watch, you might enjoy it!
thật tuyệt vời bạn ❤
Thx for making this content, really admire people like you.🙏🏼🙏🏼
I appreciate that!
That is fantastic. Thank you for sharing. I am so impressed and I think it is now possible to survive bad weather conditions. Thank you so much.
Glad you liked it!
What breed of dog is Cedar?
Lab
I was interested to see you leave the bark on the back until after drying. I would have probably done it first and then had longitudinal cracks. lol. Did you pre stretch the parachord? Synthetic chords stretch a fair bit as you mentioned. I always pre stretch artificial sinew when I use it and am always surprised at how much it stretches. Well done and very interesting. This is the first cable backed bow build I have seen and the first one I have seen in action. Keep up the great work.
Good stuff

Couple of questions, first what distance are you shooting at to determine your spine by filming the shot? Second as a left hand shooter will I my nock left/right indicators be opposite to a right hander?

Great team, you and Cedar! Nice to see some drone footage, and the place is so calm and peaceful. I´ll try surviving without food the Clay Hayes way sometime this summer. Maybe I´ll lose some pounds too!
Great content and filming! Enjoyed watching from Norway!
Glad you enjoyed it!
David west actually just put out a water bottle solar ignition video today. I found it pretty useful. @davidwestbgood2ppl
Very nicely done. I needed a refresher and this was my one stop shop. Thanks n God bless.
I hate that when you’re trying to fill your lungs back up and there’s nothing but smoke right in your face. Don’t use dried skunk cabbage for tinder. The smoke it produces smells and tastes like shit.
Appreciate you keeping it real! Failure is frequent in the nature. She’ll humble you.
Definitely
Great no nonsense, very useful techniques. Thank you.
True words of wisdoms on perspective! Thanks for the reminder.
